Is a 120 IQ good?

Archives Forums/General Discussion/Is a 120 IQ good?

Amon(Posted 2006) [#1]
I have self doubt about my inteligence so I took 5 IQ tests from different websites. After completing the tests I was told on each occasion that I had an IQ of 120.

Is this good?

I was good with recognising shapes ,understanding words and sentences and what comes next though I found the math questions difficult. One question was about a 2 cars travelling in opposite direction, each takes a left turn then travels some distance etc. I had to work out how far apart they were, but I know that I got it wrong.

Is it rude if I were to ask what your IQ's are?

If mine is 120 then for a fact some of you guys have IQ's in the 200's.

bradford6(Posted 2006) [#2]
My IQ is around 40-50 in the morning (before coffee) Spikes to about 180 for 10 or 15 minutes then plummets back down to 65-69 range for the rest of the day. Sometimes I post in this forum during my 'brilliant 15' but mostly not...like right now :)

REDi(Posted 2006) [#3]
The average IQ is 100 :)

The last time I took an IQ test the result was 136, I was pretty chuffed considering I had poor school grades due to absence (from illness).

Lol!

The average IQ is 100 :)

Ahh! Is it? That's cool because it means that I'm not of average intelligence. Yay! :)

REDi(Posted 2006) [#5]
quote from site above...

score of 120 or more in this IQ quiz would suggest you might like to have a go at a full Mensa IQ test.

Grey Alien(Posted 2006) [#6]
What I don't get about Mensa is that if your IQ is high, you realise that paying them a load of membership money for some kind of status badge that no one really cares about is pretty lame and so you don't bother ;-)

I actually think mine has dropped since school as it was over 150 but is now 143 (well a couple of years ago...it could be negative now).

If mine is 120 then for a fact some of you guys have IQ's in the 200's.
haha, I doubt anyone here is near 200, anything over 160 is pretty darn rare.

Anyway I wonder if the usual "IQ test is not valid" debate will rage on. Just in case, I'll state that I believe it's a useful test because it tells you "something" even though it's flawed in many ways. Given a choice, I'd probably rather hire a person with a 120 IQ instead of someone with 80, that is providing that they had a half decent EQ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence_tests as well.

Takuan(Posted 2006) [#8]
IQ isnt worth much without EQ.
My IQ formular goes IQ=IQ-(WOW*day).

P.S:
If you have an idea why i shouldnt have posted that in a forum full of gamers, then you propably have IQ and EQ:)

Amon(Posted 2006) [#9]
I just took some EQ tests (3) and averaged between 65%-70% correctness for the tests. Reading the information given to me after each test it shows that I have an average EQ.

So my results are :

IQ = 120
EQ = 65%

DampeS8N(Posted 2006) [#10]
My IQ is 140.
EQ was 70% ... but I think it is bull. The whole concept, not my score.

Rook Zimbabwe(Posted 2006) [#11]
The average IQ is 100 :)

Actually the average IQ is a range between 90 and 120. With the fatal exception on every test being +/- 8-10 points versus Stanford-Binet.

To qualify for MENSA you have to score at least 130+ on any one of several standardized IQ tests. PLUS you have to score highly on the MENSA application test.

Before I go on I should state that my Masters in Educational Psychology was in Measuring Intelligence and in Measuring Creativity.

Now for the fun part.

The test doesn't really mean anything.

How a person determines IQ in a test is based on many variables. Some tests are more Lingual and rely on vocabulary and knowlege of language (usually English-American Standard) to determine IQ. Several tests rely on Logical Process and Organization. A few tests utilize different forms of Problem Solving methodology to divine and score an Intelligence Quotient.

But what is "Intelligence" and how does it affect who we are and how well we deal with the world around us?

A person that has a great deal of Vocabulary Intelligence will be an idiot in a different country unless they learn a new idiom and method of expressing themselves.

A person that can solve Logic problems may not be able to add up the check at a nightclub or even tie their own shoes (at 43 years of age!) and a person that can look at a column of numbers as long as your arm and determine their final value after a complicated set of interactions may not be able to speak more than simple words.

Are these people intelligent. Yes. I knew many of them in the course of getting my Masters degree... Most of them could score 160+ on "certain" tests of Intelligence. On a more general test they would fail or fall below average.

Idiot Savant is usually the term for these people.

I take in to account that all of us have a little Idiot Savant in us... some talent we can do better than most people but which does not express itself in social situations. This talent may be mechanical/dextrous, auditory, verbal, 2D puzzle oriented, 3D puzzle oriented etc. This talent may even have been something we overlooked in ourselves or simply have not found yet.

It should also be noted that a higher IQ has been known to cause problems with the ability to finish the tasks a person sets out to do...

:) {{ NO [name edited] annoying people is NOT one of these talents!}}

SO don't panic about it. IQ is based on age and experience and is weighted to become harder and harder to score higher after age 24 in most tests...

I got a lovely score when I was younger... I am probably an imbecile now... I think I know more than I did, but I just can't remember where I put it in my head!

How you define yourself is not based on your IQ or your JOB or what school you went to. I am not going to tell you what SHOULD be how you define yyourself though... leave you to figure that one out yourself.

Oh, and I have been a member of The Mega Society since age 17.

..thats test of common knowledge and has nothing to do with intelligence tests...definition of intelligence, regarding things I use to read is '..how successful we can deal with unpredictable situations in moment we enter in to it..' , so0oo

xlsior(Posted 2006) [#15]
The average IQ is 100. (Then again -- think about how dumb the 'average person' is. ;-)

Quick google turned up the following: "Joseph Matarazzo's leading text on intelligence and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth: The average IQ is about 105 for high school graduates, 115 for college graduates and 125 for people with advanced professional degrees."

So if that is true, then an IQ of 120 would put you slightly above the median for college material.

Also: See http://www.assessmentpsychology.com/iqclassifications.htm for some specific classifications of ranges. (Below 70 is considered "mild mental retardation" in psychiatric circles, apparently)

Mustang(Posted 2006) [#16]

Then realize that half of them are dumber than that.

IQ Tests are rubbish. Your score depends more on your state of mind than any real or imagined intelligence.

Besides, truely inteligent people are to busy to bother filling out bullshit questionaires.

No need to applogise. Point well taken. :o>

Incidently I don't think dyslexia (or second languages / lack of spellchecking in browsers and the like) makes you less intelligent.

Besides which, I don't think I've ever claimed to be intelligent.

SculptureOfSoul(Posted 2006) [#24]
Correcly? Ah damnit - haste makes waste and all that jazz.

I *really* should have proof-read that post. Correctly. Bah. Well, at least I didn't mess up when I actually wrote it. That would have been embarrassing (and I'm sure my dorm mates would have had a field day with it.)

William Sidis's IQ was estimated at 250-300. He knew about 5 languages at 5 years old and could teach himself a new language in one day. He got accepted to harvard at age 11. Graduated cum laude when he was 16.

My IQ is in the 130s. Makes you wonder if people that smart see the world in a different manner. Like if they look around and see an instant solution to everything while normal people have to ponder it for a lengthy time or can't even fathom some things at all. I think it has some correlation to us programming. We're all good at it and if someone says "hey can you do this?", we're like sure gimme 2 minutes. But this Sidis guy was like that with math/physics/everything. It's quite mind-boggling. You guys should read about him...very very interesting fellow.

I took a couple of tests and got 139 on them all. I remember getting 145 a few years ago so I'm dropping.

SculptureOfSoul(Posted 2006) [#31]
I used to score between 140-160 on a variety of tests when I was 15-16 - although those tests applied some weighting function based on age. Now I'm well past the weighting point age and have gotten between 120-145.

I think I got a 130 or so on the Mensa test. I didn't join because I don't really need my ego-stroked - and don't feel like stroking others, either.

Its a strange thing, for although 100 is obviously normal, (Due to the basic definition of normal distribution and IQ), when you hang with ppl of >150 that does seem normal. Im definitly not the smartest person I know, but then I know some very smart ppl.

I know the feeling. If I could shake my ADD like symptoms, and improve my notoriously bad memory, I'd be happy.

Generalized depression and apathy don't help either. :/

Anyhow, it doesn't matter what your IQ is really; it matters what you do with it. If someone with a IQ>=150 does nothing but attempt to erect a facade of normalcy all the while growing more and more contempuous for the (abnormal, in his/her eyes) world around him or her that IQ isn't really benefitting them much.

I agree with Edison who said, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration."

Nearly always though they become more and more jealous of the simplicity of life amongst the less intelligent. The way one might look upon a special needs child, whose joy of life is never shattered by the need to understand anything. The super intelligent cannot hope to achieve the simple pleasures available to the masses. Which is why so many drop out either via drink or drugs. Trying desperately to fit into a society that doesnít like smart arse, unable to even see when they were "being" clever and slowly wishing they where just like everyone else.

Either that or inventing nuclear bombs and the like.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter what your IQ is really; it matters what you do with it

No. It matters how happy you are.

I just tried a couple, scoring in the lower 130's. A slight drop from the ~138 I got when I was 15 or so, but like SculptureOfSoul mentioned above, the ratings are age adjusted up to a point.

Anyway, I definitely notice that quite a few of the online ones are culturally biased / US centric when they include 'general knowledge' questions too, I must say.

EDIT: just made a test, it seems I am one of the few who's getting smarter when aging. A year or so ago I made about 133, now it's 140. Well maybe the reason why is this one was in my native language, where the earlier one was more "culturally biased / US centric".

However, I can hardly find a job and am unemployed since more than a year. A shame is it, IMHO.

H&K(Posted 2006) [#54]
As a point of interest, did you know that IQ tests were invented by Victorian anthropologists to prove that "the black man" was less intelligent than "the white man".

This was achieved my means of culturally biased questions, they would for example explain the British money system, then ask how many farthings in a pound (for example, and other such questions), and it was amazing that most ppl who hadnít used the system for most of their lives couldnít do it. Like asking questions about Latin words, proved that the Indian Princes were stupid. (one of the reasons the Indians were persuaded to send their sons to English schools)

T David(Posted 2006) [#55]
I dont actally believe in the whole IQ thing. Somebody who is knowledgeable about rocket science, probaly can't unclog a toilet. When I was a teen, my father brought that subject to my attention. Because somebody's IQ is high, doesnt actually make them smarter. They just knew the answers to those questions better. Take that same hi IQ individual, and stick him in a coffee shop to make coffee, he might not have clue about it. Is he stupid? No. Is he smart? NO. He is good at somethings, bad at others. I taught myself the language of music. No teachers. If you heard me today, you would of thought I was taught by Eddie Van Halen. So am I smarter? No, I just caught on quicker in the field of music. Now, about that rocket....how do I plug it in? :)

IQ tests actually do prove that black men are less intelligent than white men, but that is kind of taboo in our society. I'm also not going to debate it here becose all the resources are available in the net.

bradford6(Posted 2006) [#66]

IQ tests actually do prove that black men are less intelligent than white men

Actually, IQ tests 'Prove' nothing except that eugenicists have historically attempted to use them for their own nefarious ends.

If you are curious about Eugenics, google "Nazi Germany racial policy"

It is my opinion that intelligence simply cannot be measured with any degree of accuracy. Bias ALWAYS exists.

I just finished reading an excellent book called 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond. The fundamental principle is that advanced civilizations were not created out of superior intelligence (as we vainly assert) but are the result of certain preconditions leading to specific developments.

White Europeans are not fundamentally more intelligent than Black Africans.

This is a timeless argument and I respect everyones right to an opinion.

What one needs to consider as well is that if a person is motivated to create an intelligence test, he will enter that endeavor with certain preconceived notions as to what it means to be intelligent, he will then meet an onslaught of empirical data that will alter the outcome as well. The harder he pushes for the truth, the more elusive it will become.

Having said that, I just completed my own intelligence test and I am proud to announce that I have an intelligence level of 199. The results may be biased since I created the test myself and it has only one question.

T David(Posted 2006) [#67]
As a race maybe (debateable), but I work with some Black men that are far more supperior mentally (IQ) than the white crack heads we arrest daily. If you have good role models and have people who give a crap about you, you will succeed in the end. I have a few black men in our barracks who I would put my life in their hands, then to even compare them to low IQ individuals. They were fortunetly smarter, and got into law enforcement, which alone makes them have a higher IQ, regardless of any IQ test can prove.

H&K(Posted 2006) [#68]
IQ tests actually do prove that black men are less intelligent than white men

This is a cultural thing, if you have an IQ test written (For example), by a white Harvard graduate, then surprisingly the people that will on average do better in it are White Harvard graduates. If the test is written by a graduate of the University of Delhi, then graduates of the University of Delhi will again on average do better than anyone else.

This is not to decry the benefits of IQ tests, but to make such a statement as "prove that black men are less intelligent than white men", and then conveniently sidestep the problem of sourcing it by declaring them "Available", is inexcusable.

I have no doubt that there are plenty of sources for this statement, just as there were many showing that smoking wasnít bad for you, but its pointless, IQ tests are in the whole only valid within a cultural group. This of course would not stop someone who wants to believe the result from using it as proof

I know at least one person who's 'high IQ' - trouble is, he can't finish anything. So to my mind, perserverance often beats out them 'smarts'.

Tell me how do you guys measure an IQ higher than 150 if the max in the test result is 150? Are you trying to fool me?

However, isn't it amazing that people with a high IQ often believe in a conspiracy?

People who are capable of recognizing (existing) patterns and structures in tests, where other people don't see anything. why should they see a conspiracy when there's none?

And finally - nawi - I doubt that. They have made a statistic, ok. I only believe in statistics that I used to fake personally.

People with a high IQ, no matter from where, are an experiment of the evolution. It seems they are not aggressive enough to replace the average intelligent. It may be true that some degree of ignorance is required to survive in this worlds dogmata.

116 - but drop a hit of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25 wait 30 minutes then ask yourself why you ever thought it meant anything. ;)

(don't worry. You can't find LSD even if you try so no one will go out and hurt themself following my advice)

Depending on your point of view: Since 'smart'/educated people tend to have significantly less kids than those at the shallow end of the gene pool, evolution 'favors' low IQ.

(Of course one shouldn't anthropomorphize evolution -- it hates that)

wow... my IQ was in the 120's as well...
I've only been tested once... and I was 14
it was done by some nice lady with psych training...
apparently it was authentic...
but I still think IQ's are pretty contemprimental...
if you have a good day while taking a test, you might do really good, or maybe really low (if your attention is all over the place)...
then on a bad day, the same thing... it all varies.
I think I was having a pretty nice day when I had mine.
overall I think it's just another way of grouping people.
so if you have a high IQ: YAY! good for you :)
if you don't: Meh, good for you too... if your too "intelligent" you over analize and life sux... it's just a number... it feels like a labido thing anyway...
the studs have there large genitals,
the redneck has his gun,
the geek has his IQ.

I hope that didn't offend anyone, I'm odd with analogies.
